This is a piece I wrote back in college, it was an exercise based on a picture I found in a newspaper.  The original story was accompanied by a photo of a diver having just lept from a high platform.  The background of the photo made it look like the diver had just lept from a building.  I no longer have the photo, so you’ll have to use your imagination.

The Cinorom Indians of Ecuador used to be seen daily, gracefully performing the aerobatics necessary to achieve Drawergib, a ritual act demonstrating their faith to their God Namgib.  This ancient ritual once practiced from the tops of the tallest trees of the jungle, but since the technological revolution, the trees have been usurped in their position of highest point in the area.  The rituals demanding that they jump from such prominences has lead them into the cities so recently carved into the jungle hillsides.  Due to the recent total eclipse which occurred last Wednesday the number of Cinorom utilizing this form of redemption has tripled.  When asked to comment the tribe shaman stated "The darkness has foretold the time of destruction, we must prove ourselves worthy in the eyes of Namgib!"

Since its completion, the Holiday Inn tower in Modeerfon has become the highest point in the Ecuadorian jungle and thus the focus of ceremonies for the tribe.  The Cinorom come from miles around to practice their religion faithfully.  Unfortunately such devotion has also diminished their numbers to such an extent, that the Historical Preservation of Native Cultures Committee, in an effort to preserve the Cinorom, brought suit against the tribe claiming the practice of their religion is not only detrimental to themselves, but also bad for tourism.  The Committee leader stated, "They have a beautiful religious heritage that we respect greatly, but we must control their behavior if we want our children’s children to be able to know and appreciate [the Cinorom.]"

"Our patrons become very disturbed whenever bodies go plummeting by their windows,"  said the hotel manager.  "I just want to run a business, not a temple for maniacal religions with suicidal ceremonies!"  Till such time as the District Judge can rule on the matter, a temporary restraining order has been placed in effect, baring the Cinorom from further practice of their religion.

Despite their lawyer having completed the ritual himself two days after the eclipse, the remaining Cinorom leaders have vowed to fight the suit  and have refused to follow the restraining order.  The remnants of the tribe were arrested last Tuesday as they attempted to sneak up the stairwell of the Holiday Inn.  "You can’t keep us down forever!"  they chanted as they were taken in custody to await the trial.
